This machine-readable and biometric e-passport is mainly issued so that the passport holder can travel to foreign countries. The Maldives, in South Asia, is the first country that issue e-passports for all eligible citizens, and Bangladesh had positioned second in that race.

The Department of Immigration and Passports of the Ministry of Home Affairs manufacture prints and issue this passport booklet. The first Traditional Passport was issued on 8 February 1973, Machine Readable Passport on 1 April 2010, and the first E-Passport was issued on 22 January 2020 by the Department of Immigration & Passports.

The E-passport is contained with forty-one different security features embedded by the electronic microprocessor chip. The holographic images embossed in thin-film laminate are also a useful feature that can change color under light and appear to move.

The fingerprints of all ten fingers, iris scan, color photograph of the face, and digital signature are called the demographic and biometric information of the e-passport holder.

These pieces of information are stored on the chip in the e-passport. The Government of The People’s Republic of Bangladesh distributes the e-passport depending on the applicant’s age and is valid for either five years or ten years.

History of Bangladeshi Passport

The date was 8 February 1973, after the Bangladesh Liberation War, the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh signed Act Number 9 of 1973 into law that is called The Bangladesh Passport Order, 1973 and then the first passport was created or issued in the newly independent Bangladesh as that was the first passport in Bangladesh so that the booklets of that passport were traditional, handwritten or manual, passports and were compliant with the relevant international laws and regulations.

A plan to replace over 6.6 million handwritten passports with new biometric machine-readable passports was announced by the Government of Bangladesh in 2010 and started issuing machine-readable passports (MRP) and machine-readable visas (MRV) in April 2010.

The Government of Bangladesh announced the first plan of issuing an E-passport in 2016. But the inauguration of the distribution of e-passports has happened after 4 years on 22 January 2020 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at an event in the capital’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

There are three types of passports available in Bangladesh. These passports are-

Ordinary Passport

Generally, the Ordinary passport has a green cover. The ordinary regular citizens of Bangladesh issue this ordinary passport for international travel, like for a vacation, study, business trips, etc.

Official Passport

The Official passport is made with a blue cover. Usually, the Bangladesh government employees, government officials, and individuals issue this type of passport for representing the Bangladeshi government on official business.

Diplomatic Passport

Finally, a Diplomatic passport. This passport is included with a red cover. Bangladeshi diplomats, top-ranking government officials, and diplomatic couriers issue this Diplomatic passport.
